Many Actavis manufacturing sites have achieved independent certification of their environmental, health and safety management systems.
Currently 10 operational sites have achieved ISO 14001 (environmental management system) certification and 6 sites have been awarded OHSAS 18001 (occupational health & safety) certification.
Our Mission
Actavis is committed to operating a safe and responsible pharmaceutical company that protects the environment and promotes the health & wellbeing of our colleagues and the communities we operate in. In support of this commitment and in line with our company values, we will:
- Aim to make smart choices to protect people, achieve a more environmentally sustainable future and to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements.
- Establish and monitor ambitious objectives and targets to achieve continuous improvement and to prevent occupational injury, illness or environmental pollution.
- Work together as a team to promote a positive culture where every employee embraces personal responsibility for health and safety, and the environment.
- Openly communicate with customers, colleagues, communities, contractors, suppliers, regulators and other stakeholders.
- Keep our message simple 'prevent incidents, improve environmental sustainability and ensure compliance'.
Policies / Procedures
Actavis operates in geographically diverse regions and recognises that EHS Standards vary so has set out policies / procedures which are considered minimum standards for Actavis companies to implement. In conjunction with Corporate Quality, a ‘Corporate Manual’ was developed which contains integrated quality and EHS requirements for Actavis sites.
Goals / performance
There is a well established process for setting and tracking EHS goals within Actavis. Apart from standardised Key Performance Indicators such as Near Miss Rate, Inspection Rate and Lost Work Day Case Rate, individual locations also have the flexibility to set site specific goals to address local issues.
Managing compliance
Compliance with company and regulatory requirements is a strategic priority for Actavis. A compliance issue management system was established to keep track of any issues or potential issues identified during due diligence assessments, Corporate EHS Audits, insurance surveys etc. Compliance results are considered a key measure of a company’s performance and these are closely tracked and results communicated regularly to senior management.
Environmental due diligence is carried out during the acquisition process to identify any compliance issues. We support new members of the Actavis Group to understand our expectations so that standards are aligned and issues addressed quickly and effectively.
Managing incidents
Actavis uses a worldwide incident management system to closely monitor incidents, their investigations and corrective action plans to ensure that effective actions are being taken to prevent re-occurrence.
Corporate auditing
Over the last five years, Actavis has performed Corporate EHS Audits at almost all operational sites and in 2009 we introduced a requirement for every site to carry out their own EHS Self Assessment using a standard Corporate template.
Training & development
Investing in our people to enhance their skills and knowledge is essential to ensure we keep up to date with business demands, changing requirements and best practice. Actavis has organised comprehensive training events to develop our environmental, health & safety personnel.
Best practice is shared at our regular EHS Network meetings which have been taking place on average monthly over the last few years.
Hosted by experts from different Actavis companies these meetings have proved to be an effective form of communication whilst avoiding the need for travel and hence minimising our carbon footprint.
